Better Sleep Starts with the Right Mattress
30th Jul 2025
Finding the right mattress is key to a good night’s sleep and your long-term health. A well-suited mattress supports spinal alignment, relieves pressure points, and helps you wake up refreshed. But with so many types available, it can sometimes feel overwhelming & hard to know where to start. So here's our expert opinion on what to consider when choosing the perfect mattress for your needs.
Start with your sleep position
- Side sleepers benefit from soft to medium mattresses that cushion the shoulders and hips, especially with zoning that tailors support to different body areas.
- Back sleepers generally need a medium to firm mattress that keeps the spine aligned with minimal sinkage.
- Stomach sleepers do best with firm surfaces that prevent the lower back from dipping, often found in firm foam or hybrid mattresses.

Consider the mattress cover
Natural fabrics like cotton, bamboo, or wool are breathable and ideal for hot sleepers or sensitive skin. Stretch-knit quilted covers add a plush feel, while hypoallergenic options help resist dust mites and allergens.
Know your springs
Bonnell springs are budget-friendly and supportive but lack motion isolation, so are best suited to single or king single beds. Pocket spring mattress feature a network of individually wrapped wire coils, where each spring moves independently. These are great for couples because they reduce partner disturbance - if you sleep next to a restless sleeper, you won't be continuously woken by their movement.

Look at the foam layers
Memory foam conforms closely to the body to distribute weight evenly, relieve pressure points & promote natural spinal alignment. It also absorbs movement, so if your partner tosses and turns, you're less likely to be disturbed. Gel-infused memory foam has the added bonus of helping regulate temperature.
Natural latex is naturally cooler, more responsive & eco-friendly than PU foam. This is generally seen in top of the line mattresses.
PU (polyurethane) foam will come in different densities which help set the firmness of the mattress. Sometimes this is infused with added properties such as charcoal for hygiene purposes.

Zoning matters
Zoned mattresses are designed to offer targeted support by varying firmness across different areas of the mattress to suit the body’s natural contours. For instance, zones around the spine are typically firmer to promote alignment, while areas beneath the head, neck, and legs are softer for added comfort. Zoning can apply to both foam density and spring tension.
A 3-zone mattress generally supports the shoulders and hips, while more advanced 5- or 7-zone models offer extra support to areas such as the lower back and legs. This helps maintain proper spinal alignment and can reduce tossing and turning throughout the night.
